When Buchanan Park Goes Quiet, Hamilton Park's Fall Moves Into a Former Church on Buchanan Avenue

The last Buchanan Park beer garden of 2026 closed on August 8. Lancaster Rec's beer garden schedule gave the park three summer weekends, July 23 to 25, July 30 to August 1, and August 6 to 8. It has no fall dates there. The season's last beer garden happens across town on October 17, when RECtoberfest goes to Conestoga Pines Park.

That's nine nights of organized gathering in the park, all of them done by early August. Then the stained glass at the corner of College and Buchanan Avenues takes over. In the former St. Peter's United Church of Christ, West Art's Art Bar is open every day, according to the venue's own site. From now through Thanksgiving it has something on the calendar nearly every night.

For the Buchanan Park edge that Hamilton Park shares, the cold-weather gathering spot is already open and runs on a weekly schedule. The ticketed concerts get the posters. The standing weeknight programs are the reason to walk over in November.

A 15,000-Square-Foot Church Built for Weeknights

LNP reported that Josh Gibbel and Rufus Deakin, who both live in Lancaster city's west end, bought the church in 2023. Their goal was a "third space," somewhere to spend time outside of work and home. LNP's framing was that if Lancaster city were a house, West Art wants to be its living room. Deakin told the paper, "We started thinking about what we were aiming for, which was to make this building as inclusive as possible."

The building is about 15,000 square feet, and the rooms split the work. LNP describes City Hall, on the first floor, as the bigger room, with darker floors, a lot of stained glass and updated sound equipment that suit nighttime shows. The Sanctuary has pastel stained glass and a light wood floor, and it hosts the smaller performances. West Art's spaces page also lists the Art Bar and a basement Elbow Room, and it gives the Art Bar's hours as 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. On its about page, West Art says the bar serves coffee by day and alcoholic and nonalcoholic drinks later.

The daily coffee service is fairly new. Before the cafe opened, LNP reported that the city had the venue pause events on February 14 while cafe renovations went on. Concerts came back on Saturday, April 26, after the building passed a city inspection. LNP's preview of the coffee bar said it seats about 70. By September 2025, Fig Lancaster was describing an all-day espresso bar with a curated list of wine, beer and cocktails.

That's why this fall is different from West Art's first seasons. Daily cafe hours turned a concert venue into a place with a reason to visit on a Tuesday.

The Week, Day by Day

These are the standing programs on West Art's calendar right now. Most happen in the Art Bar, the room open every day, and most need no ticket bought weeks ahead.

  • Monday: Chess Club, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Art Bar, open to all levels.
  • Tuesday: Old Time Jam, 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. in the Art Bar. Acoustic players can sit in, and anyone can come just to listen.
  • Wednesday: Community Yoga with Lija, 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in City Hall, pay what you can. Kindermusik meets that morning at 9:30 and 10:30.
  • Thursday: Kindermusik again at 9:30 and 10:30 a.m. plus a 4:15 p.m. class in City Hall, then Drink & Draw, 7 to 9 p.m. in the Art Bar, an all-ages, low-pressure meetup.
  • Friday: Community Yoga with Jill at 7 and 9:30 a.m. in the Sanctuary, pay what you can with a suggested $10 to $25, then Watercolor Club with Jo Davis, 3 to 4 p.m. in the Art Bar, $15 paid to the instructor.
  • Sunday: Community yoga with Alax at 9:30 a.m. The calendar also had Jazz Night in the Art Bar from 7 to 9 p.m. on Sunday, October 18.

This post goes up on a Thursday, so the nearest of these is tonight's Drink & Draw at 7. The Kindermusik page keeps the current dates, and the Jazz Night page is where any upcoming Sunday dates will show. The yoga pages list sessions only through October 30, so check them before planning around a November class.

Compare that list with the park's nine beer garden nights. In any normal week, the church has a free or low-cost reason to stop by on six days out of seven.

The Shows Worth Planning Around

The ticketed concerts fill in around that weekly base. These are the one-off dates on West Art's calendar from October 22 through the end of November.

Sun., Nov. 22 Slap Dragon with Barkley Cove 7:30 to 10 p.m., Sanctuary Ticket link on page

Briston Maroney is already sold out, more than two weeks ahead. For the other shows, buy early.

The Halloween show is the one closest to a neighborhood party. West Art calls it a continuing holiday tradition with the Nielsen Family Band. The band brings a carnival wheel and lets the audience spin it to pick the covers they play. Health Club joins them, Jon Smith of Jon Smith's Voyages opens with a solo set, and the venue runs its annual costume contest. The event page lists City Hall in its header but mentions the Sanctuary in its description, so look at the page that night before heading in.

The Honky Tonk Night is the easiest of these to make a habit of. It's monthly, it's $15 at the door, and it's on a Thursday, the same night Drink & Draw already runs in the Art Bar.

So far, the calendar shows nothing at West Art for Thanksgiving week. The citywide season starts right after. Lancaster City's holiday program puts the Mayor's Tree Lighting on November 27 and Small Business Saturday on November 28.

The Part of the Park That Stays Open

Buchanan Park doesn't go dark when the beer gardens leave. The City of Lancaster's parks page lists the park at 901 Buchanan Ave. It also lists Beau's Dream Dog Park inside it, which is free and open year-round from dawn to dusk, with separate small-dog and large-dog areas.

After the clocks fall back, dawn to dusk ends earlier every week. A dog walk at 5 p.m. and Wednesday's 5:30 yoga in City Hall make an easy pair on a November evening. A Sunday morning dog park visit before Alax's 9:30 class works too, or a Monday walk that ends at the 6:30 chess club.

So the park still covers the daylight, and the church at College and Buchanan covers the evenings.

I keep track of places like West Art because they shape what a block feels like in November, not just in July.
